Andy Gipson faces backlash over proposed Sharia law ban

Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner and gubernatorial candidate Andy Gipson is facing backlash from faith leaders following comments regarding Islam and a proposal to ban Sharia law. Gipson has pledged to ban the influence of Islam and Sharia law if elected governor, despite the fact that the state legislature already banned the use of Sharia law in Mississippi courts in 2015.

Gipson defended his stance by arguing that his proposal targets a separate legal system rather than the Islamic faith itself. He claimed that Sharia law functions as a separate legal system that could violate constitutional rights and cited examples of oppression in Iran to justify his position. He stated, “It’s not the threat of people who are good faith practicing Muslims. The threat is Sharia law.”

In response, religious leaders from various communities gathered at the International Museum of Muslim Culture in Jackson to denounce his rhetoric as “reckless and dangerous.” The groups, including Working Together Jackson and Working Together Mississippi, have invited Gipson to engage in an open dialogue. Community members and advocates have also raised concerns that the proposal may be unconstitutional.
