Andy Lewis appointed Chief Inspector of Rail Accidents
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has announced that Andy Lewis will be appointed as the new Chief Inspector of Rail Accidents. Lewis is scheduled to assume the position in November 2026, following the retirement of Andrew Hall, who has served in the role for nearly five years.
Lewis has an extensive background in engineering and rail safety. After beginning his career as a marine engineer with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, he transitioned to the railway industry in the mid-1990s. His experience includes delivering new trains for the London Underground and mainline railways, as well as consulting on rail vehicle safety and on-train data recorders.
Lewis joined the RAIB as an inspector in 2007. He has since held several leadership positions within the organization, including Principal Inspector in 2019 and Deputy Chief Inspector in 2022.
