Andy Lippman, Veteran AP Bureau Chief, Dies at 78

Andy Lippman, the longtime Los Angeles bureau chief for the Associated Press, died at his home in Tucson on July 25 at age 78. The cause was multiple system atrophy, a rare neuro‑degenerative disease.

Lippman's AP career began in 1971 and spanned more than three decades, during which he led bureaus in Louisville, Indianapolis and Los Angeles. He supervised coverage of several historic events, including the O.J. Simpson murder trial, the 1992 Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King verdict, and the 1994 Northridge earthquake that killed more than 70 people and caused $20 billion in damage. Colleagues praised his mentorship, thoughtfulness, and ability to build a close‑knit newsroom community.
