Andy Liu Jianming demands redress after unlawful arrest in Suriname
Andy Liu Jianming, chairman of the Suriname Chinese United Association and Chung Fa Foei Kon, is demanding apologies and legal redress following his release from custody. On October 21, three judges from the Court of Justice of Suriname unanimously ruled that his arrest and subsequent detention were unlawful, ordering his immediate release.
Liu was detained in connection with an investigation into the arson of a vehicle. He alleges that police identified him as a potential mastermind based solely on the statement of a suspect caught at the scene. Liu maintains that searches of his home and vehicle yielded no incriminating evidence and asserts that video footage places him elsewhere during the time of the alleged crime.
Furthermore, Liu disputes specific details provided by the suspect, including claims of a US$1,500 down payment and descriptions of his clothing. He criticized the police for a reportedly rough arrest and for the rapid publication of his personal identity details on a news website shortly after his detention. Liu stated that the incident has caused significant damage to his physical and mental well-being, reputation, and family life.
