Andy Robertson has spoken candidly about the profound impact the death of Diogo Jota had on Liverpool FC. Jota, along with his brother Andre Silva, died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, in July 2025.

Robertson, who recently moved to Tottenham Hotspur, explained that the tragedy caused the squad to lose its competitive edge and determination. He noted that during the grieving process, the players “didn’t care about football” because they had lost a close friend. This emotional state contributed to a difficult season where the club finished fifth and saw manager Arne Slot depart.

Robertson also expressed sympathy for high-profile new signings, such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, stating they joined a “heartbroken” club and struggled to adapt because the veteran players were preoccupied with their grief. Robertson recalled the personal difficulty of attending Jota’s wedding just one week before the accident occurred.
