Andy Roddick criticizes Nick Kyrgios over doping suspension
Former world number one Andy Roddick has criticized Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios, calling him a “hypocrite” following Kyrgios’s provisional suspension for a positive doping test.
Kyrgios tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, during the Mallorca Open. While the substance is prohibited, sanctions can sometimes be reduced if consumption occurred outside of competition. Kyrgios has been under provisional suspension since August 4, which prevents him from competing, training, or coaching.
Roddick used his podcast, “Served with Andy Roddick,” to highlight what he perceives as double standards. He noted that Kyrgios had been a vocal critic of other players, such as Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek, regarding their own doping controversies. Roddick argued that Kyrgios seeks understanding and context for his own mistakes while simultaneously engaging in online harassment and selective judgment of others.
