Andy Serkis defends all‑white cast for upcoming “The Hunt for Gollum” film

The forthcoming Lord of the Rings movie, “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” slated for a December 2027 release, has drawn criticism for its entirely white principal cast, which includes actors such as Jamie Dornan, Anya Taylor‑Joy, Kate Winslet, Lee Pace, Leo Woodall, Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen. In a BBC interview, actor‑director Andy Serkis said the casting choices were guided by J.R.R. Tolkien’s original descriptions and Norse‑mythology influences, not by “politically correct” considerations. He acknowledged the backlash, stating, “I don’t think we’ll be doing a politically correct casting‑for‑the‑sake‑of‑casting version of the film,” and added that “the Shire feels very, very much like a very white” place. Serkis also referenced earlier controversy over Amazon’s “The Rings of Power” for its diverse casting, insisting the new film will remain faithful to the source material.
