Andy Warhol J. Edgar Hoover Whitney Museum of Art pop art cookie jar trade

A portrait of Marc Cheshire and his mother, Maxine Cheshire, is currently featured in the Whitney Museum of Art as part of Andy Warhol’s ‘Family Album’ collection. The inclusion of the Cheshire family in the 732-photo Polaroid series was the result of an unusual trade involving a piece of FBI history.

In March 1973, Marc Cheshire purchased a pig-shaped cookie jar for $1.50 at an estate sale for the late FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. Recognizing Warhol’s interest in cookie jars, society publicist R. Couri Hay facilitated a swap. The Cheshire family traveled to Warhol’s Factory, where the cookie jar was traded for iconic prints, including a Mao print.
