Aneel announces return to green tariff flag for October
The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) has announced that Brazil will return to the ‘green tariff flag’ in October. This change ends a five-month period of the ‘yellow tariff flag,’ which imposed an additional charge of R$ 1.885 for every 100 kWh consumed.
The shift to the green flag means no extra charges will be applied to electricity bills, providing relief to households, businesses, and industries. According to Aneel, the decision is driven by increased rainfall in the South and Southeast regions, which has stabilized hydroelectric reservoir levels. This improved hydrological situation allows the National Interconnected System (SIN) to reduce reliance on more expensive thermoelectric power plants.
While the green flag eliminates the specific tariff flag surcharge, it does not automatically lower total electricity bills. Total costs remain subject to individual consumption levels, local distribution company adjustments, taxes, and municipal lighting fees. Additionally, Aneel recently revised its projection for energy tariff increases to 9.4% due to inflation and other financial components.
