Brazil faces renewable energy hurdles and tariff disputes

The Brazilian Senate recently held a thematic debate regarding the challenges facing the expansion of renewable energy. Experts and government representatives identified several critical bottlenecks, including the urgent need to modernize and expand the transmission network, a lack of regulation for offshore wind and green hydrogen, and the difficulty of establishing tariffs that encourage investment without increasing costs for consumers.

Senator Tereza Cristina highlighted that 83% of the industrial sector reports a loss of competitiveness due to high electricity costs, warning against subsidies that could inflate tariffs compared to international competitors like China and Canada.

In a separate regulatory development, ANEEL has postponed a decision on the annual tariff adjustment for Equatorial Pará. The delay follows a public civil action filed by the State of Pará, which seeks greater transparency regarding the calculation criteria for the proposed increase, which was estimated to be between 6.6% and 8.09% depending on the consumer group.
