Serbia media regulator accused of abusing authority before elections

The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) in Serbia is facing accusations of abusing its power following the release of a document accusing television channels N1 and Nova S of violating pre-election silence. Four independent members of the REM Council, including Rodoljub Šabić, have stated that the Council never discussed, voted on, or reached a decision regarding these alleged violations. They noted that a scheduled meeting could not even take place due to a lack of quorum.

The Coalition for Media Freedom has called for a public prosecutor's investigation into the circumstances surrounding the document's publication. They are seeking to determine the criminal responsibility of REM Council President Stevica Smederevac and other officials, citing potential abuse of office. Critics argue the move serves as a political tool to discredit independent media ahead of parliamentary elections.

Separately, media organizations have reported increased pressure on journalists. The Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM) recorded 257 attacks, threats, or instances of obstruction against journalists since the beginning of the year. Additionally, journalists in Vranje and Pančevo have reported being denied access to monitor the work of local election commissions, despite legal requirements for transparency during the electoral process.
