Anffas Modica investigation triggers president's resignation and judicial hearing

A judicial hearing was held in Ragusa concerning the Anffas Modica care facility, where authorities are probing alleged mistreatment and abuse between November 2025 and February 2026. Six of the seven individuals subject to precautionary measures chose to remain silent on the advice of their defence lawyers, while a second suspect under house arrest is currently abroad and will be questioned upon return. The investigation lists a total of 13 people, including two under house arrest, five subject to interdiction orders and six free pending further inquiry.

Following the hearing, Giovanni Provvidenza stepped down as president of Anffas Modica, with his resignation formally recorded on 5 August 2026. The court’s precautionary custody order does not conclude the probe, and investigators note that surveillance footage and audio recordings were removed only weeks ago, suggesting further evidence may emerge.
