Anfia urges EU to impose 80% tariffs on Chinese cars and parts
Roberto Vavassori, president of the Italian automotive supplier lobby Anfia, has called on the European Union to implement 80% tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles and components. The proposal suggests that Chinese imports should remain duty-free up to a threshold of 8% of annual European vehicle registrations, with the higher tariff applied to any volume exceeding that limit.
Vavassori emphasized that the measures must include parts and components, noting they constitute roughly 80% of a vehicle's total value. He expressed concern that the rise of Chinese competition threatens Europe's strategic autonomy. Data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) indicates that the market share of Chinese brands in the EU grew to over 9% during the first half of the year.
The lobby group warned of significant economic consequences for Italian suppliers. In 2025, Italian suppliers exported 4.9 billion euros worth of products to Germany, with Volkswagen accounting for 20% of that volume. Vavassori predicted that without protective measures, Italian component exports could plummet by 40% to 50% by 2028.
