Angel Gurria estimates $75 billion needed for Gaza reconstruction
During a session at the TRT World Forum 2026 in Istanbul, former OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria highlighted the massive financial requirements for rebuilding Middle Eastern economies following recent conflicts. Gurria estimated that Gaza requires at least $75 billion for reconstruction, while Lebanon needs approximately $20 billion and Syria requires three times that amount.
Gurria emphasized that these costs are too high for any single nation or organization to manage alone. He called for a multilateral approach involving regional development banks, the United States, the European Union, Gulf nations, and various national governments to ensure financial stability and recovery.
Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri also spoke at the panel, addressing the ongoing impact of Israeli military actions in Lebanon. Mitri noted that many villages have become uninhabitable and stressed the urgent need for infrastructure repair to allow displaced citizens to return home and rebuild their lives.
