Angel Tube station to become exit-only on weekends
Transport for London (TfL) has announced that Angel Tube station will operate as exit-only on weekends and bank holidays starting January 2, 2027. This measure is intended to extend the working life of the station's aging escalators, some of which are nearly 35 years old.
The station contains two banks of escalators, including the longest on the London Underground network, measuring over 60 meters in length with a vertical rise of more than 27 meters. Due to their size and age, maintenance has become increasingly difficult and unreliable. TfL noted that historic shortfalls in government funding for essential asset renewals have prevented the immediate replacement of these units.
Design work for the replacement of the escalators is scheduled to begin this autumn. In the interim, the exit-only restriction will allow engineers to manage the equipment more effectively while exploring long-term renewal and repair options within current funding constraints.
