Angela Davis discusses abolitionist feminism at UNAM

American philosopher and activist Angela Davis participated in a master dialogue at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) as part of the VIII FILUNI International Book Fair. The event focused on the book ‘Abolition, Feminism, Now! Toward the End of the Carceral System’, co-authored by Davis, Gina Dent, Erica Meiners, and Beth Richie.

During the discussion, Davis described abolitionist feminism as a “revolutionary way of thinking to defeat capitalism and colonialism.” Gina Dent emphasized that addressing incarceration and police surveillance requires understanding how gender, sexuality, and violence intersect to produce such structures, arguing against using prisons to solve gender-based issues.

The high attendance at the Centro Cultural Universitario forced UNAM authorities to open additional venues, including the Carlos Chávez Room, several cinema halls, and the La Espiga esplanade, to accommodate the large crowd. The session was moderated by Amneris Chaparro Martínez and presented by Rosa Beltrán.
