Angela Merkel discusses political influence of Bill Gates

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has commented on the political influence wielded by Bill Gates and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Speaking in a Handelsblatt podcast titled ‘Meckel & Matthes’, Merkel reflected on how the immense financial resources of private wealth can translate into political leverage.

Merkel noted that the scale of the foundation’s funding allowed Gates to engage with world leaders on equal footing with heads of state. She described the phenomenon as ‘moral pressure through money,’ specifically citing instances related to the funding of international vaccination alliances. According to Merkel, if a government, such as Germany, provided insufficient funding, it could result in political pressure being applied. She also mentioned that Gates had communicated to other leaders, particularly in Africa, that she had been ‘stingy’ in certain years.

These observations were made during a discussion regarding the power of tech corporations and the necessity of regulation to prevent the formation of oligopolies.
