Angela Merkel sees surge in popularity and poll support

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel is experiencing a resurgence in public visibility and popularity five years after leaving office. Her portrait by Jérémie Queyras at the Bode-Museum in Berlin has attracted significant crowds, leading to an extension of the exhibition until January 3. Merkel has also maintained a presence through her autobiography, ‘Freiheit’, which has sold over one million copies, and appearances on social media platforms like TikTok.

A YouGov poll indicates a wave of nostalgia, with 48% of German citizens believing Merkel would be better equipped to handle current national problems than the incumbent Chancellor, Friedrich Merz. Only 8% of respondents viewed her competence as inferior to Merz's. The survey highlights growing dissatisfaction with Merz's administration, as political interest shifts toward the stability associated with Merkel's 16-year tenure.
