Angela Merkel to receive Elisabeth-Preis from Caritas Augsburg

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be awarded the Elisabeth-Preis, the highest distinction of the Caritas Association of the Diocese of Augsburg. The ceremony is scheduled for September 25 at the Golden Hall of the Augsburg City Hall.

Markus Müller, Director of the Caritas Association for the Diocese of Augsburg, stated that the award recognizes Merkel’s “outstanding merits and her work for solidarity, responsibility, and respectful coexistence.” He emphasized that the country currently needs individuals who stand for “humanity and togetherness.”

The award, named after Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia, has historically been presented to local Caritas employees, such as nursing management and social station board members. The upcoming presentation marks a shift toward honoring high-profile political figures. Journalist Sarah Bosetti is set to deliver the laudatory speech.
