Angela Merkel visits Bucharest to launch memoirs and meet President Dan

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Bucharest to launch her memoir, ‘Freedom. Memories 1954 – 2021’. During her visit, she was received at the Cotroceni Palace by Romanian President Nicușor Dan.

In discussions with President Dan, Merkel addressed global political and security contexts, emphasizing the need for a more united European Union and stronger European defense within NATO. She highlighted the potential for cooperation between Romania and Germany to promote European cohesion.

At a public dialogue held at the Romanian Athenaeum with diplomat Emil Hurezeanu, Merkel commented on the Romanian political landscape. While avoiding direct commentary on specific ongoing negotiations, she expressed her hope that Romania would soon have an elected prime minister. She stressed that democracy requires the ability to find majorities and make compromises, noting that the value of compromise is increasingly under pressure from digital media and fragmented political landscapes. She observed that Romania has made significant progress in recent decades, even if reforms do not always occur at the speed citizens desire.
