Angela Merkel warns Europe on security as Zelenskyy praises German support

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has issued a warning regarding European security, suggesting that the continent can no longer rely on the United States as it once did. Speaking at an event in Bucharest, Merkel emphasized that European nations must increase military spending to secure a peaceful future, noting that the era of the peace dividend is over.

Merkel also reflected on the early stages of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, praising President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his decision to remain in Kyiv. She noted that had Zelenskyy accepted an American offer to seek refuge in the U.S., Ukraine might not exist as a sovereign nation today.

In a separate development, President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for Germany's continued support and sanctions against Russia. Following the discovery of an explosive drone at the Halle/Leipzig airport, Zelenskyy praised the German response. The two leaders have reportedly agreed to a personal meeting and are finalizing a drone agreement intended to enhance protection for both nations. Zelenskyy also offered Ukrainian expertise to assist Germany with drone defense capabilities.
