Angela Rayner CV controversy sparks Labour credibility concerns

Labour Deputy Leader Angela Rayner is being questioned over claims that she spent 14 years as a council‑employed home care worker. Freedom‑of‑information data from Stockport Council show she worked privately as a home help from 1998‑2000, then full‑time for the council from August 2000 to April 2005, part‑time until April 2011 while also serving as an assistant branch secretary for the union, and finally on full‑time secondment to union duties until she became an MP in 2015. Rayner has said the roles “blurred” and that she was given paid time off for trade‑union work, but she was never employed by Unison; her official job title remained “home help”. The Conservatives have framed the issue as part of a “credibility crisis” for Labour, joining previous scrutiny of other Labour ministers’ CVs. The BBC challenged Rayner on Radio 4’s PM programme, prompting her to post a 2003 photo of herself working as a home carer for Stockport Council.

The dispute centres on whether Rayner’s public statements overstated her local‑government service, with political opponents using the matter to question Labour’s transparency ahead of upcoming elections.
