Angela Rayner opposed China’s London embassy over security risks

Angela Rayner privately opposed the construction of a large-scale Chinese embassy in London due to concerns regarding national security and espionage risks. According to Whitehall insiders, the Housing Secretary believed the project at Royal Mint Court could be damaging to British interests and potentially used to monitor Chinese dissidents within the UK.

While Rayner left her position before her successor, Steve Reed, approved the diplomatic compound in January, her reluctance highlights internal unease within the Labour government regarding Chinese influence. MI5 Director-General Sir Ken McCallum noted that while national security risks cannot be entirely eliminated, professional mitigating measures have been implemented to allow the development to proceed.
