Angelo Binaghi criticizes Italian sports funding and coaching changes
Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation (FITP), has voiced his support for coach Darren Cahill amid rumors regarding Jannik Sinner’s technical staff. While reports suggest Sinner may consider Magnus Norman to join Simone Vagnozzi, Binaghi described Cahill as “insostituibile” (irreplaceable), emphasizing the importance of having a high-level former player and a strong psychologist in the role.
Binaghi also addressed the distribution of state resources for sports in Italy. He argued that current funding models are flawed, suggesting that resources should be allocated based on a federation's ability to increase participation rather than just competitive results. He specifically criticized the disproportionate funding received by football, stating that if objective criteria were applied, football would receive less than half of its current state funding.
