Angelo Bonelli rejects ‘campo largo’ name and primary elections

Angelo Bonelli, representing Avs, has expressed opposition to the term ‘campo largo’ and the use of primary elections within the center-left coalition. Speaking at events in Rome and Florence, Bonelli argued that primaries might increase internal differences rather than serving as a useful tool during the current political phase.

Bonelli emphasized that Avs will not delegate its political and programmatic proposals to other entities and will make its own evaluation regarding any decision to hold primaries. He stated that the priority should be building a credible alternative to the Meloni government and defining a common program to challenge the right wing.

Regarding leadership, Bonelli noted that while he holds respect for the Democratic Party and Giuseppe Conte, he seeks a leader who can strongly champion social justice, climate issues, peace, and international law. He indicated that the coalition will define the best path forward once members convene to discuss leadership and program construction.
