Angelo Mai theater in Rome to remain closed for at least one year
The Angelo Mai cultural space in Rome is expected to remain closed for at least one year following an eviction by the police on the night of June 27-28. Following a recent inspection involving law enforcement, the Labor Inspectorate, and a commission from the Municipality of Rome, the responsibilities for reopening the venue have been clarified.
The Municipality of Rome, as the property owner, is responsible for essential safety works required to remove the current seals on the building. However, the collective managing the space must fund any additional adjustments necessary for its continued use.
The collective behind Angelo Mai expressed concerns regarding lengthy administrative processes and criticized the lack of recognition and valorization for creative spaces in Rome. They argued that the closure reflects a broader political trend toward the disappearance of contemporary experimental theater in favor of more traditional, bourgeois institutions.
