Angelo Vassallo murder: Family boycotts 16th anniversary commemorations

Sixteen years after the murder of Angelo Vassallo, the former mayor of Pollica known as the ‘Sindaco Pescatore’, tensions have risen between his family and local authorities. The Angelo Vassallo Foundation has announced it will not participate in the official commemorations in Acciaroli this year, criticizing the site as being in a state of “squallida e indegna” (shabby and unworthy) neglect. The Foundation described the official ceremonies as mere “passerelle politiche” (political showcases) that fail to honor his memory through daily care of the territory.

While the municipality of Pollica maintains its traditional program of remembrance, including a mass and a wreath-laying ceremony at sea, the Vassallo family is focusing on different ways to preserve his legacy. This includes the upcoming publication of a book by his son, Antonio Vassallo, which aims to provide a complete account of his father’s life and the impact of the crime.

Legal proceedings regarding the case continue to evolve. A court in Frosinone recently ordered a 100,000 euro compensation payment to Colonel Fabio Cagnazzo, ruling that television reports by ‘Le Iene’ were defamatory regarding his alleged involvement in the investigation. Meanwhile, the main trial involving other suspects has faced delays, with the next session at the Court of Assize of Salerno rescheduled for November 2 due to judicial incompatibility.
