Angelo Vassallo remembered as a symbol of legality in Pollica
Sixteen years after the assassination of Angelo Vassallo, his legacy as a symbol of legality and good administration continues to be honored in Pollica. Vassallo, the former mayor of Pollica in the Cilento region, was killed on September 5, 2010, after refusing to succumb to mafia pressure regarding drug trafficking and illegal building speculation.
His son, Antonio Vassallo, describes his father as a visionary leader who sought to promote the Mediterranean Diet and legal maritime industries as drivers for regional growth. Angelo Vassallo is remembered for his commitment to the state and his belief that local communities are the foundation of the nation, encapsulated in his philosophy: ‘It is the towns that make the Country’.
