Angelos Deretzis calls for reform of Greek traditional markets

Angelos Deretzis, President of the General Confederation of Traditional Markets of Greece, has called for a major reform of the sector's institutional framework. He stated that traditional markets need to 'turn a new page' to ensure long-term sustainability and viability.

Deretzis criticized the 2021 regulatory framework, claiming it increased bureaucracy and prevented new producers and professionals from entering the market. He noted that these policies have led to mass vendor departures, empty stalls, and a decline in product variety and consumer interest.

While acknowledging recent positive steps and corrections made through cooperation with Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos, Deretzis emphasized that stabilization is only a starting point. He is advocating for a modern, flexible operating model that features professional organization and faster decision-making to make these markets more attractive to consumers.
