Angelos Marghetis: Greek baker preserves tradition after 64 years

Angelos Marghetis, an 88-year-old baker in Loutraki, Greece, continues to operate his traditional wood-fired bakery, a profession he has maintained for 64 years. Starting his work at 3:00 AM, Marghetis uses sourdough and traditional methods without additives or improvers.

Following a family tradition started by his father in 1957, Marghetis emphasizes the importance of patience, water temperature, and the sourdough process. Despite rising production costs, such as the increased price of wood, he has maintained his bread price at 2.50 euros for approximately a decade. His products have gained a following even abroad, with customers transporting the long-lasting bread to relatives in the United Kingdom and the United States. Two of his four children have also entered the profession, maintaining bakeries in Corinth.
