France climate protests: Thousands march for environmental and social justice

Thousands of people across France participated in a massive wave of climate demonstrations on September 26, 2026. Coordinated via the 26septembre.org platform, approximately 260 gatherings were recorded, with organizers estimating nearly 100,000 total participants. The marches, held in cities such as Paris, Bordeaux, Grenoble, and Montpellier, focused on themes of climate urgency, biodiversity, peace, and social justice.

Protesters are demanding emergency climate adaptation and mitigation plans. They propose funding these measures through new taxes on fossil fuel superprofits, the arms industry, and wealthy individuals. This mobilization follows a summer marked by record heatwaves, which reportedly caused over 8,000 deaths in France, and devastating wildfires.

In Clermont-Ferrand, the march was disrupted when a vehicle drove into the crowd, resulting in four minor injuries; authorities reported the 37-year-old driver was under the influence of narcotics. Meanwhile, debates continue regarding the government's 2027 budget. While Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu promised a 1.1 billion euro increase for the Ecology ministry, critics like Anne Bringault of the Réseau action climat describe the increase as 'deceptive' due to the rising costs of supporting renewable energy.
