Angie Nixon faces scrutiny over fetal rights comments and resource defunding
Florida Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Angie Nixon has faced scrutiny following comments regarding unborn rights and her past legislative actions. Nixon, a state Representative and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, previously stated that legislation granting basic rights to a fetus or zygote would be “devastating.”
Nixon also previously sought to defund Strong Florida Moms, a state-supported website providing pregnancy and parenting resources. She acknowledged attempting to use an amendment to “carve out” funding for the site, noting that the platform aims to “encourage people to not go through with abortions.”
As a candidate, Nixon has championed universal healthcare, childcare, and minimum wage increases. She has also been a vocal critic of Florida’s six-week abortion limit. Her upcoming opponent in the November election is Republican Senator Ashley Moody.
