Angie Nixon to settle misdemeanor charges following protest at Governor's office
Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon has agreed to pay a $250 fine and complete 15 hours of community service to resolve misdemeanor charges in Leon County. The charges, which included trespassing and resisting an officer without violence, stemmed from a May 15 sit-in at Governor Ron DeSantis’ office. Nixon conducted the protest in response to the Republican-led Legislature's approval of a new congressional map. While Nixon maintains she did nothing wrong and was simply attempting to demand accountability from elected leaders, the settlement concludes the legal proceedings regarding the incident.
Separately, Nixon has raised concerns regarding the level of support she is receiving from national Democratic leadership. Following her upset victory in the Democratic Senate primary, Nixon stated that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been noncommittal regarding campaign funding. She suggested that national leaders may be hesitant to fund progressive Black women candidates in the South, citing the recent electoral performance of Vice President Kamala Harris as a factor for this caution. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) responded by stating they are monitoring all races closely and have established a joint fundraising committee with Nixon’s campaign.
