Angie Nixon wins Florida Democratic Senate primary

Florida State Representative Angie Nixon has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate following an unexpected primary victory. Nixon, a progressive Democrat and labor organizer, defeated former Army intelligence officer Alexander Vindman despite a significant fundraising gap. While Vindman had raised over $16 million, Nixon raised approximately $975,000 by the end of July.

Nixon, who is the second Black woman to win a major party nomination for the U.S. Senate in Florida, will face Republican Ashley Moody in the November special election. Moody was appointed to the seat after Marco Rubio transitioned to Secretary of State. Nixon has received endorsements from figures such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and cites inspirations including Ayanna Pressley and Bernie Sanders.

The campaign has also been marked by personal attacks; Nixon was among several Black women politicians targeted by far-right activist Laura Loomer. Nixon intends to leverage her background as a small business owner and community organizer to focus on issues such as youth mental health and access to capital for small businesses.
