Angie Nixon wins Florida Democratic Senate primary

State Representative Angie Nixon has won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Florida, defeating establishment-backed candidate and former Trump impeachment witness Alex Vindman. Nixon secured approximately 54% to 56% of the vote, despite being significantly outspent by Vindman, who maintained a $16 million campaign fund.

Nixon, who has ties to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), has since sought to distance herself from the socialist label ahead of the general election. She stated she is “not a socialist” and rejected specific DSA platform items such as defunding the police or abolishing prisons, though she maintains support for universal healthcare and public housing.

The primary victory has highlighted ideological divisions within the Florida Democratic Party. While some party members have called for unity to face Republican Senator Ashley Moody in November, others have expressed concern regarding Nixon’s electability in a state that has trended Republican. Republicans, including Governor Ron DeSantis, have signaled intentions to frame the general election as a referendum on Nixon’s perceived radicalism.
