Anglian Water warns hosepipe ban could last until winter

Anglian Water has indicated that the current hosepipe ban in the east of England may remain in place well into autumn or even until winter. The restrictions, which were introduced on July 11 following extreme heat and prolonged dry weather, prohibit activities such as watering gardens, cleaning vehicles, and filling swimming pools or hot tubs.

Grant Tufts, public affairs lead for Anglian Water, stated at a Norfolk County Council meeting that significant and consistent rainfall is required to replenish reservoir, river, and groundwater supplies. The company noted that a few weeks of rain may not be sufficient to reverse the effects of months of dry weather, as dry ground often prevents water from soaking in effectively.

In Norfolk, the Environment Agency confirmed that drought conditions will persist for some time. Meanwhile, Essex & Suffolk Water reported that water demand has fallen by approximately 7% since the introduction of a Temporary Use Ban in August. However, combined reservoir storage stood at 52% at the end of August, with rainfall levels at 71% of the long-term average for the month.
