Anglo American begins desalinated water supply for Los Bronces mine
Anglo American has inaugurated a desalination water supply system to support its Los Bronces copper mine in Chile. The project involves transporting desalinated water from the Pacific Ocean over 300 kilometers to the mine, located at an altitude of 3,500 meters in the Andes mountains.
In its first phase, the system will provide up to 500 liters per second, covering more than 45% of the operation's water needs. This initiative is part of the Integrated Water Security Project (IWSP), which aims to completely replace fresh water use in the Los Bronces mining process by 2030.
The project also includes a social component intended to benefit local communities in Colina and Tiltil. Approximately 10,000 people will benefit from the allocation of 25 liters per second to six rural sanitary services, with potable water expected to be available to these communities by December 2026.
