Angola advances hydroelectric and energy sector developments

Angola is making significant strides in its energy infrastructure, specifically through the Caculo Cabaça hydroelectric project. The project, located on the Kwanza River, has reached a 58% global execution rate. Once operational, expected in 2027, the facility will have an installed capacity of 2,172 megawatts. This development is projected to help double the nation's hydroelectric capacity and increase total installed electrical capacity to approximately 8,000 megawatts.

The project includes a main underground powerhouse and an ecological flow station designed to maintain river ecosystems. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to diversify the energy matrix by increasing hydroelectric and solar production to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

In Mozambique, Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) reported a 13% increase in electricity production during the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year, reaching 6,399.03 GWh. This growth exceeded production forecasts by approximately 10% through improved water resource management.
