Angola and Mozambique forecast drought and extreme rainfall for 2026-27
Meteorological institutes in Angola and Mozambique have issued warnings regarding extreme weather patterns for the 2026-27 rainy season.
In Angola, the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INAMET) forecasts drought conditions in the south and southeast due to El Niño. Moderate drought is expected between October and December 2026 in Cunene, Cuando Cubango, and parts of Moxico. From January to March 2027, conditions may become moderate-to-severe in Lunda Sul, Moxico, Lunda Norte, and Bié. Conversely, the positive phase of the Tropical South Atlantic Index (TSA) is expected to cause excess rainfall along the coast, specifically affecting provinces such as Cabinda, Zaire, Bengo, Luanda, and Benguela.
In Mozambique, the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) has alerted the Maputo province to a risk of moderate drought in the Moamba and Magude districts between January and March 2027. The institute recommends early response measures, including the distribution of drought-resistant seeds, rehabilitation of water boreholes, and livestock protection. This monitoring is supported by the World Food Programme to assess impacts on agriculture and water resources.
