Angola and Nigeria see renewed upstream oil and gas activity
The upstream petroleum sectors in Angola and Nigeria are experiencing renewed investment and operational activity. In Angola, the industry is entering a new production cycle characterized by gas commercialization, deepwater development, and renewed exploration. Key developments include the start of the country’s first non-associated gas project led by the New Gas Consortium and the landmark gas discovery at Block 1/14. Recent milestones include the start-up of the Begonia and CLOV Phase 3 projects, the commissioning of the Agogo FPSO, and progress on the Kaminho project, which is expected to begin production in 2028.
In Nigeria, rig deployment has increased, with the total rig count reaching 73 in March 2026, a 22.6 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2025. Land operations represent the majority of this activity with 52 rigs recorded. Additionally, the multibillion-dollar Bonga South-West/Aparo deepwater project is nearing a Final Investment Decision (FID), supported by agreements involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and its partners.
