Angola calls for proactive conflict prevention in Africa

Angola is advocating for more rapid and coordinated responses to conflicts across Africa. During a press conference regarding the 21st Extraordinary Session of the African Union Heads of State and Government, Angola’s ambassador to Ethiopia, Miguel Bembe, emphasized the need for mechanisms that can anticipate crises rather than merely reacting to them.

Technical diagnostics from the African Union Peace and Security Council have identified several structural drivers of instability, including political deficits in social contracts, the nexus between climate and technology, and geopolitical interference regarding strategic mineral resources. Other challenges include the rise of transnational jihadist groups and unconstitutional changes of government. Bembe stated that the strategic priority should be to empower existing institutions with greater capacity for anticipation, efficiency, and binding execution, rather than creating new statutory bodies.
