Angola expands public sector workforce and education initiatives

Angola is implementing significant structural changes across its public sector and education system. The government announced that the monthly wage bill for civil service personnel has reached €229.2 million, with a projected annual cost of €3.1 billion. The public sector workforce has increased by 2.47% compared to 2024, bringing the total number of public servants to 437,157. The education sector represents the largest portion of this workforce at 52.46%, followed by health at 20.48%.

In the education sector, more than 9.8 million students have begun the 2026-2027 academic year. To support this, the government is expanding the National School Feeding Program to reach three million children to combat absenteeism and dropout rates. Additionally, the 'Projeto Escola Digital' is being rolled out across 10 provinces, introducing connected classrooms, digital libraries, and artificial intelligence content. The initiative includes modernizing 1,100 schools, utilizing solar-powered equipment in areas lacking electricity.

To address staffing needs, Angola is recruiting 9,000 additional teachers. Meanwhile, a multi-phase reclassification process for 59,375 public servants under a special employment regime is underway, estimated to cost €54.9 million with a target completion date in the first half of 2027.
