Angola: President Lourenço delivers State of the Nation address
Angolan President João Lourenço delivered his State of the Nation address to the National Assembly, providing a retrospective of his administration and outlining future priorities. Lourenço highlighted increased diplomatic influence, the strategic importance of the Lobito Corridor, and the country's role in regional peace and mediation. He also announced plans for a national youth conference and a proposal to revise the Penal Code to strengthen protections for minors.
In tandem with the political address, Angola inaugurated the 'Eternal Alliance' Memorial to the Victims of Political Conflicts in Luanda. The facility is intended to preserve historical memory and promote national reconciliation following the civil conflicts that occurred between 1975 and 2002.
The President's address faced significant criticism from opposition groups. UNITA leader Adalberto Costa Júnior described the administration's tenure as a 'lost decade,' citing structural issues such as unemployment, food insecurity, and inadequate healthcare. Additionally, the Cabinda Independence Movement (MIC) rejected the government's economic reports, arguing that the benefits of the territory's oil resources do not reach the local population and that the region continues to suffer from poverty and repression.
