Global school year 2026/2027 begins amid resource distribution and financial pressures

The 2026/2027 academic year has commenced across various regions, marked by both government investments and logistical or financial challenges.

In Angola, the Ministry of Education announced the distribution of approximately 2 million textbooks and 12,000 desks to reinforce public schools. In Cabinda, provincial authorities are acquiring 18,000 desks to support over 270,000 students. In Huambo, the new cycle includes 140 new schools and a school feeding program covering 3 million students. However, families in Luanda report significant stress due to rising tuition fees and the high cost of school supplies, which they claim are outstripping stagnant wages. Additionally, some institutions are facing difficulties with enrollment confirmation and class list postings.

In Portugal, the Azores region reported that 98% of teaching positions were filled at the start of the term. Meanwhile, in Évora, students from a primary school closed since November due to safety concerns will begin classes in temporary prefabricated containers installed by the municipality.
