Angola launches program to rehabilitate 617 rural water systems
The Angolan government has launched the Immediate Action Program (PAI) as part of the Climate Resilience and Water Security Project (RECLIMA) to rehabilitate 617 rural water supply systems across five southern provinces. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Energy and Water, is funded by the World Bank and the French Development Agency.
The program aims to restore functionality to systems that are currently inoperable or operating at reduced capacity. Of the 617 systems targeted, 307 utilize solar-powered pumps and 310 rely on manual pumping. Works will include repairing hydraulic infrastructure, recovering damaged or vandalized equipment, and strengthening community management and operation mechanisms.
In the Cunene province, interventions will cover several municipalities, including Cafima, Chiéde, Cuanhama, Namacunde, Nehone, Chissuata, Cuvelai, Mupa, Ombadja, Cahama, Chitado, Curoca, Humbe, and Naulila. The project also includes measures to protect infrastructure against theft, vandalism, and lightning strikes to ensure long-term service sustainability.
