Angola weather forecast predicts drought and heavy rain

The National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics of Angola (INAMET) has issued weather forecasts for the 2026-27 agricultural season, warning of divergent climate extremes across the country. Due to the influence of El Niño and a positive phase of the Tropical South Atlantic Index, Angola is expected to face drought in the south and southeast, while coastal regions prepare for excessive rainfall.

In the southern and southeastern provinces, including Cunene, Cuando Cubango, Moxico, and Lunda Sul, El Niño is expected to trigger moderate to severe meteorological drought. This phenomenon is projected to impact the period from October 2026 through March 2027, potentially threatening agriculture, livestock, and food security in these vulnerable areas.

Conversely, the coastal and western provinces—such as Luanda, Benguela, Cabinda, Zaire, and Bengo—are likely to experience excessive rainfall and potential flooding. This trend is driven by the Tropical South Atlantic Index and is expected to be most influential from late 2026 through the first quarter of 2027. Authorities have urged the population to follow official meteorological updates to mitigate risks to infrastructure and livelihoods.
