Angolan man dies in French police custody in Saint-Ouen
A 44-year-old man of Angolan origin, identified as Maurício, died while in police custody at a station in Saint-Ouen, near Paris. He had been detained on Monday following allegations of intoxication, sexist insults, and threats against authorities.
According to police reports, Maurício was examined by a doctor and interrogated on Tuesday morning before being returned to his cell. He was found unconscious around 3:00 PM and subsequently died of cardiorespiratory arrest. While an initial autopsy reported no traumatic injuries and suggested a natural cause related to a prior cardiac condition, the Bobigny Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the death.
The victim's family, represented by lawyer Yassine Bouzrou, has filed a complaint alleging voluntary violence by a person in a position of public authority. The family disputes the claim of natural death, noting that the man had no known medical conditions that would justify a sudden death. The General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) is also conducting an inquiry into the incident.
