Angola's SIC faces challenges combating high crime rates in Luanda

During the ninth Expanded Consultative Council of the Criminal Investigation Service (SIC) in Luanda, Angolan authorities addressed ongoing challenges in combating crime. While national crime statistics showed a decrease between January and September, with 21,921 crimes recorded compared to the previous year, Luanda remains the province with the highest number of criminal occurrences, accounting for 7,783 arrests during that period.

Interior Minister Manuel Homem emphasized the need for the SIC to move beyond reactive measures. He called for the agency to strengthen its ability to anticipate threats, improve criminal intelligence production, and ensure investigations are supported by rigorous scientific evidence and legal compliance.

SIC Director-General Luciano Tânio da Silva noted that the capital's high crime rates are partly linked to demographic growth. He advocated for increasing investigative capacity to match evolving criminal trends. The council meeting focuses on human capital valorization and technological innovation to enhance public security and institutional responses.
