Anil Dabydeen sentenced to 10 years for Charlotte highway shooting

A Charlotte, North Carolina man, Anil Dabydeen, 41, was sentenced on federal court to ten years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for opening fire on vehicles traveling on Interstate‑485. The attack occurred on January 8, 2025 near South Tryon Street after 911 calls reported a gunman shooting at moving traffic. Police from the Charlotte‑Mecklenburg Police Department located Dabydeen’s white Honda sedan, pursued it, and recovered a 9‑mm Taurus G3c pistol with an extended magazine that had been reported stolen.

Dabydeen, who previously served a sentence for attempted murder in New York, was prohibited by federal law from possessing firearms. Federal prosecutor Russ Ferguson emphasized the case as an example of the need to remove illegal guns from the streets. The sentencing underscores the city’s response to violent incidents that threaten public safety.
