Animal Friends urges Croatian cities to sign Plant Based Treaty

Animal Friends has become an official advocate for the Plant Based Treaty, a global initiative aimed at placing food systems at the center of the fight against the climate crisis. Modeled after the Fossil Fuel Treaty, the declaration calls for an urgent transformation of food systems to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, halt deforestation, decrease water consumption, and protect the environment.

Animal Friends is calling on cities across Croatia to support the declaration, joining international cities such as Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Los Angeles, Belfast, and Strasbourg. By signing, cities can implement various measures, including increasing the availability of plant-based food in public institutions, launching educational campaigns, or supporting local and sustainable food production.

The organization notes that Croatia already has a foundation for such changes, as it is a signatory to the COP28 declaration on including food system transformation in climate policies, and its low-carbon development strategy recognizes the importance of increasing plant-based food consumption.
